Overview

The U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) are located 40 miles east of Puerto Rico between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The USVI consist of the islands of St. Croix, St. John and St Thomas. The capital of the US Virgin Islands is Charlotte Amelie and the population is 107,000.

As a territory of the United States, all schools follow the US education system. K-12 education is under the jurisdiction of the USVI Department of Education with additional information available from the U.S. Department of Education.

Higher education is the responsibility of the Virgin Islands Department of Education. The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is one of 101 US Historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). UVI campuses are located in St Thomas and St. Croix. Universities are under the jurisdiction of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The language of instruction in the US Virgin Islands is English.

N.B. Residents of the US Virgin Islands are US citizens and can not only travel to and from the United States without a visa, they are eligible to work, vote and hold elective office.
