Mayotte

In 1843 Mayotte was ceded to France with the Comoros group of islands. In 1974 it was the only island in the group to retain its link with France forgoing independence. Mayotte is an Island located between northern Mozambique and Madagascar in the Mozambique Channel. The languages spoken on the island are Mahorian and French. The island has a population of 223,765 and the literacy rate is not available.
