There will be no written exams in middle school and high school this spring. Many oral exams are also canceled.

This was announced by the Ministry of Education on Monday.

We would very much like to have completed all exams as planned. There have been some very different offers of education for the pupils this school year, which provides a different basis for assessment. A joint and equal written exam is therefore no longer a suitable test of what the students have learned, says Minister of Education Guri Melby (V).

The graduating students are allowed to take an oral exam

Oral examination is conducted for the graduating students in 10th grade and VG3. All private students are also allowed to take the exam, because they have no other assessment basis. Other students with a need to complete an examination in order to obtain a diploma or trade and journeyman's certificate, as well as students with the right to a new, postponed and special examination, may also complete the examination as normal.

All oral-practical and practical exams are canceled. Melby says the cancellations have been the subject of careful assessments, where they have listened to many suggestions both for and against cancellation.

Labor: Should have gone further

Both the Student Organization and several opposition parties believe, however, that Melby should have gone a step further, and canceled oral exams in addition to the written ones.

It is surprising that Melby does not listen to the professional advice to cancel the exam completely, says education policy spokesman Torstein Tvedt Solberg in the Labor Party to NTB.

Examinations in primary and secondary school were completely canceled in the spring of 2020, with the exception of private exams. At that time, all students throughout the country had been in home school through March and April. This year there are big differences in different parts of the country. Students in Oslo, for example, have mostly been at home school since November.
