“Brazil cannot continue with closed schools”, said Milton Ribeiro

The Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, defended today (20) the return of students to face-to-face classes in schools. Ribeiro made a statement on national radio and TV and stated that the measure cannot be postponed any longer.

“I want to call them to return to classroom classes. Brazil cannot continue with closed schools, generating negative impacts for this and future generations”, he said.

The minister also mentioned that studies by international organizations show that closing schools has devastating consequences for students, such as loss of learning, progress in knowledge and an increase in school dropout.

“Several countries returned to face-to-face classes in 2020, when vaccination was not even planned. The use of alcohol-gel, the use of masks and social distancing are measures that the world is using successfully”, he commented.

According to the minister, the decision on the closing and opening of schools does not belong to the federal government and the return can be made with sanitary restrictions in basic and higher education institutions. The minister said that the ministry invested more than R$1.7 billion to fight covid-19 in public schools.

“The Ministry of Education cannot determine the return to classes in person, otherwise, I would have already determined”, he stated.

Ribeiro also said that he asked the Ministry of Health to prioritize all basic education professionals in vaccination against covid-19.
