Evaluating Prior Learning


Assessment and awarding of institutional credit for experiences which may include work or life experiences including military training and experience, national or institutional examinations, or alternative demonstration of college-level knowledge and competencies. 

Content knowledge requirements: Institutional catalog and degree pathways, national best practices on the assessment of prior learning, knowledge and understanding of the Joint Statement on Transfer Credit, AACRAO Transfer Student Bill of Rights, AACRAO Institutional Bill of Rights & Responsibilities, AACRAO’s Guide to Best Practices: Awarding Transfer and Prior Learning Credit, The ACE National Guide, the ACE Military Guide, and common sources of CPL including CLEP, AP, IB, etc. Knowledge of CAEL and other national CPL organizations; experience with academic programs, degree and general education requirements, course articulation and degree audit systems.

Skill requirements: Excellent research, critical thinking and analysis skills. Attention to detail and documentation. Deep understanding of curriculum and program outcomes; ability to exercise judgement and find solutions to complex problems. Strong communication and project management skills; technical facility to work in degree audit and curricular management systems. Ability to develop and maintain of effective collaborative working relationships with others.

Ethical requirements: Commitment to consistency, equity and fairness in application of policy and to address innovation and new approaches to serve the best interests of the student. Maintain currency with prior learning assessment (PLA) “best practices” and
organizations.

Expertise Levels

Entry level: Manage workflow of institutional PLA processes; effectively communicate PLA policies to students and faculty; and serve as student advocate in the PLA process. 

Intermediate level:  Create and maintain communications to internal and external constituencies regarding current practices, policies and procedures for the award of credit for prior learning. Conduct training sessions to assist faculty and staff in understanding their roles in the PLA process; participate in policy assessment.

Expert level:  Create, revise and recommend policies and practices related to PLA that are consistent with standards related to accreditation and national best practices; develop relationships with employers and other state agencies for the purposes of creating opportunities for PLA pathways; review and analyze data on the use of PLA processes and its impact on recruitment, retention and graduation; maintain currency with innovative trends and alternative education approaches.
