We were able to connect with AACRAO Annual Meeting presenters Candice Pellegrino, Jamie Holmes-Kriger, and Eve Wong, all of Stevens Institute of Technology, to discuss their session "Interviewing Skills Needed to Go to the Next Level of Your Career and How to Investigate the Unknown."
Presenters outlined some of the challenges, skills, and tactics involved in interviewing from both sides of the table and discussed how things have changed in the post-COVID era. Ms. Holmes-Kriger outlined the presentation saying:
"If you have not been searching for a job recently, you might not be aware that the process emphasis has changed, especially in the era of COVID. Registrars and Admissions Officers have traditionally stayed in a silo when seeking their next position, but this new era allows us to expand our opportunities when advancing our careers..."
Speaking on some of the hidden aspects many miss when reviewing positions, Ms. Holmes-Kriger said:
"When we see a position at an institution that seems interesting, most of us start going down a checklist for job fit that is in our head. Benefits tend to be high on the list for most of us. Many people only look at benefits as listed days off, compensation, healthcare, tuition remission, and retirement. They fail to look at other benefit perks or ask others in their network about possibilities at the institution. A few examples include working from home, hour modifications, and professional development."
Highlighting the social aspect of the process, Ms. Pellegrino emphasized the importance of networking:
"I find that networking is usually a good tool when going through this process. Your colleagues/connections give you a "view" into if the job is a good fit for you. Which is just as important as the benefits the position provides."
In preparation for their session, the team at Stevens Institute of Technology also submitted an introductory video for AACRAO members to learn a little bit more about their session topic.
