In the previous issue, we shared IIE’s Open Doors International Student Census survey, which provides essential enrollment numbers. In this edition, we are focusing on the Open Doors U.S. Study Abroad Survey, which dives into U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit.

The data is revealed in tables, charts, and graphs, including information on:

  • Destinations

  • Duration of study abroad

  • Fields of study

  • Host regions

  • Leading institutions

  • Students with disabilities

  • The student profile

  • Non-credit experiential activities abroad

AACRAO encourages your institution to participate in the IIE Study Abroad Survey.  The information serves as a valuable tool for universities seeking funding, building international partnerships, and making the case for study abroad programs on their campuses. The deadline for the 2025 U.S. Study Abroad Survey submission is May 2, 2025.

The data you provide will be incorporated into the annual Open Doors Report, which will be released at the beginning of International Education Week, the third week of November, 2025.  By contributing your institution's information, you are helping to create an accurate and comprehensive resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the United States, as well as U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit at their home colleges or universities.

If your institution hasn’t received information about the surveys or needs help verifying your submission, contact the Open Doors team at opendoors@iie.org.

AACRAO and IIE thank you for your continued support. Together, we’re building a stronger, more informed international education community. As international learner mobility continues to rebound and reshape, your institution’s participation ensures that the data reflect the whole landscape.
