I am humbled and honored to be nominated for the Vice President for Information Technology. I’m interested in serving for a few reasons. The first is that I am an advocate for continuous improvement. My registrar experience includes implementing technology to help support and streamline business processes such as: online transcript ordering and fulfillment, online graduation application, curriculum management, class scheduling optimizer and document imaging/OCR transcript reading to support transfer credit evaluation. Technology has transformed workflows at institutions and as a champion for systems, I want to serve and advocate for the issues that affect higher education, such as student data exchange and the comprehensive learner record.
The second reason is to use my board experiences to serve AACRAO. I’ve had the opportunity to serve on the Illinois ACRAO (IACRAO) Board as President and Professional Activities Officer. I was also part of the technology team that helped transition IACRAO to MemberClicks which is our membership database that has website management, event registration, and listserve functions. Outside of AACRAO, I’ve had the opportunity to serve on the school board of my children’s grade school for the last six years. During my time, the Board transitioned from an operational Board to a strategic/visioning one. As part of the school Board, I helped implement Google Drive as a tool to keep Board documents, instead of scanning paper documents onto a USB thumb drive.
Finally, I would love to be a part of the continued diversification of board members. I’ve been a member of AACRAO since 2006, and I’ve not seen a person from the AAPI community on the Board. It is my hope that if I’m selected to serve, that this would encourage other Asian Americans to get involved in AACRAO leadership.
Thank you for considering me for Vice President for Information Technology. My experiences within AACRAO and IACRAO have provided me insights into how AACRAO is structured and functions. Furthermore, I believe my experiences as a registrar implementing technology, and board experiences have prepared me to serve on the AACRAO Board. If selected, I would be honored to be the organization's next VP for Information Technology.
Chris Huang is the Associate Vice Chancellor and Registrar, Purdue University Fort Wayne. He has served as a registrar since 2006 at both private and public institutions. Chris’ career in higher education began as an admissions
counselor at this alma mater, Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He holds a Master of Arts in Communication from Purdue Northwest. Since 2013, Chris has been an active member of the Illinois Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions
Officers holding several leadership positions: District Chair, Professional Activities Officer and President.
Since 2017, Chris has been involved with AACRAO’s Asian and Pacific-Islander Caucus. Why he joined: "As a Taiwanese immigrant, the value of education was instilled in me by my parents. As a person of color, there have been times in my personal
and professional lives where I’ve felt like an outsider or that I didn’t belong. As a member of the AAPI Caucus, I hope to connect with colleagues through the association to share our experiences and support each other in our
work and create a sense of belonging among peers. This includes mentoring, sharing our successes and raising awareness about access and equity for our AAPI colleagues and students. It was my honor to serve the AAPI caucus as chair from 2018-2020.
I also had the opportunity to serve as Illinois AACRAO’s first AAPI president in 2018. I want to encourage AAPI colleagues to be involved in leadership positions at the state and regional levels and at the national level, so that
our voices can be heard."
