Please tell us about your session.
Michelle: I oversee the whole Reverse Transfer Program and currently serve as the Director of Reverse Transfer for the University of North Carolina-General Administration. I previously served as Director of Transfer Student Services at Middle Tennessee State University, where I established one of the first reverse transfer agreements in the state with Nashville State Community College. I also served as Assistant Director of the University Honors Program at UT for eight and half years. I’ve presented at national and regional ACRAO conferences on reverse transfer and the National Summit on Reverse Transfer sponsored by the National Student Clearinghouse.
Elizabeth: I work in the information technology department in web applications. As the Data Warehouse Coordinator for the University of North Carolina General Administration, I work on a variety of projects including the building of a student data warehouse for all 16 University of North Carolina system universities as well developing technology solutions to support the implementation of Reverse Transfer in North Carolina. I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in the area of Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation at The University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG), where I obtained my MBA.
Please describe what you plan to present at AACRAO’s Tech/Transfer Conference.
We plan to provide an overview of UNC’s approach to handling reverse transfer, emphasizing the different technology solutions that we’ve developed to meet the needs of the project.
What are the key “take-aways” from your session?
We hope that attendees will walk away with ideas on how they can use technology to harness reverse transfer in their own state. Attendees will also learn some sustainable technology solutions to help with their reverse transfer processes.
Please share your perspective on gathering “buy-in” from various stake holders on campus.
We felt that it was important to obtain the support of institutional leadership as well as different levels of team members. We strongly believe that we would not be able develop seamless solutions without broad-based support for our initiatives.
Was FERPA a sensitive component of the Reverse Transfer equation?
Yes, it was definitely central and really drove our technology solutions. Michelle regularly checked in with our legal department to make sure we were following all the proper guidelines. One important piece of that was ensuring that we had mechanisms in place to gather students’ consent as we were setting up processes.
How would you characterize the results of the initiatives you’ve undertaken on your campus?
One of the unintended consequences is that the program brought the UNC system and community colleges closer together. Consequently, we were able to share Reverse-Transfer-facilitating technology with 58 community colleges.
What are you looking forward to at the upcoming Technology and Transfer Conference in Austin?
We are very excited because Reverse Transfer has become a national movement. There will be three or four other sessions on Reverse Transfer at the AACRAO Conference and we think attendees will benefit from hearing the various perspectives.
