Dear Readers,
The word “update” literally comes from “up” and “date”—first paired that way in the 1940s to “supply with the most recent information.” Simple enough, right? Until you’re managing information in the age of information (or are we post-information age?). Then comes the choice: update what already exists or insert something new? And somewhere in between is the wonderfully wicked “upsert”: update the info if it’s there or insert it if it isn’t. An upsert can be a blessing or a curse depending on how much time you had to think ahead. It can feel like a never-ending cycle of deciding what to revise, what to add, and what needs a new entry altogether. Sometimes staying current starts with choosing the right operation. And if you get it wrong … update, insert, upsert, cry, bang chest, shake it off, repeat. On a lighter note, it’s Pumpkin or Maple flavor time—treat your fall beverages accordingly.
