U.S. Territories and Minor Outlying Islands

Overview

There are 14 territories administered by the United States but not claimed by any of the 50 US states. 9 of these territories are uninhabited, but in the 5 territories where educational institutions exist (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), they follow the U.S. education system and are recognized/accredited either locally or in the United States.

  • Baker Island (Oceania): Located in the North Pacific Ocean halfway between Hawaii and Australia; unpopulated.

  • Howland Island (Oceania): Located in the North Pacific Ocean 1800 miles southwest of Hawaii and two-thirds of the way between Hawaii and the Australia; unpopulated.
  • Jarvis Island (Oceania): Located in the North Pacific Ocean 1800 miles southwest of Hawaii and two-thirds of the way between Hawaii and the Australia; unpopulated.
  • Johnston Atoll (Oceania): Located in the North Pacific Ocean 700 miles southwest of Hawaii and one-third of the way between Hawaii and the Australia; unpopulated.
  • Kingman Reef (Oceania): Located in the North Pacific Ocean 1800 miles southwest of Hawaii and two-thirds of the way between Hawaii and the Australia; unpopulated.
  • Midway Island (Oceania): Located in the South Pacific Ocean halfway between Hawaii and the Australia; unpopulated.
  • Navassa Island (Caribbean/North America): Located in the Caribbean Sea, 30 miles west of Haiti; unpopulated.
  • Northern Mariana Islands, Commonwealth of the (Oceania)
  • Palmyra Island (Oceania): Located in the South Pacific Ocean halfway between Hawaii and the Australia; unpopulated.
  • Puerto Rico, Commonwealth of (North America/Caribbean)
  • U.S. Virgin Islands (North America/Caribbean)
  • Wake Island (Oceania): Located in the North Pacific two-thirds of the way between Hawaii and the Northern Mariana Islands with a population of 150 U.S. Air Force personnel.
