For-Profit Group Offers “Best Practices” for Serving Military and Veteran Students

February 27, 2013

A task force convened by the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU), the for-profit lobbying group, issued today a set of “best practices” for serving active-duty military and veteran students.

The recommendations touch on career services, pedagogy and student recruitment. Best practices outlined in the report include: protecting military and veteran students from “aggressive and misleading” recruitment practices; providing accurate information during recruitment and enrollment, along with in-depth financial counseling; providing faculty training on active-duty and veteran students’ learning needs and available support services; participating in the Yellow Ribbon program; and creating “appropriate and accurate” metrics to deal with flaws in current measurements of student success, among other things.

The report comes at a time when campuses across the United States are anticipating that thousands more veterans will enroll in the coming years, using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, reports the Chronicle of Higher Education. The proprietary sector, which enrolls a disproportionate share of military and veteran students, has come under increasing scrutiny in the last few years amid government efforts to crack down on deceptive practices by colleges that recruit veterans.

APSCU President Steve Gunderson said that the report should be useful to all of higher education. The association plans to release three other reports on quality standards related to marketing and admissions, employment services and placement, and financial literacy in coming months.
