Trump One Step Closer to Removing ED From LBJ Building

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee voted on July 14, 2026, to approve  moving the Department of Education out of the Lyndon B. Johnson Building, its headquarters for over 45 years, and into a smaller, privately owned facility at 500 D Street SW (formerly occupied by USAID, which was shut down in early 2025). Because the move requires a special resolution called a prospectus rather than standard legislation, it needs approval only from the relevant committees in each chamber and not the full House and Senate, meaning the last remaining hurdle is a vote from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, where it is also expected to pass. Inside Higher Ed reports that Democrats fiercely opposed the move, with Rep. John Garamendi of California arguing that losing the building would make it significantly harder to rebuild the Department’s staffing and operations in the future, framing the relocation as part of a broader effort to permanently dismantle the Department of Education rather than a simple change of address.
