he Ministry of Public Education (SEP) announced the creation of the “Margarita Maza” National High School , an educational model designed for young people who “ don’t want to spend many hours ” in the classroom and who are looking for alternatives to complete their upper secondary education. The Undersecretary of Upper Secondary Education , Tania Rodríguez Mora , indicated that this plan aims to reintegrate students who dropped out of school and is expected to benefit 30,000 students , according to information published by Proceso .
During the conference at the National Palace , Rodríguez Mora explained: “We are going to build 100 ‘Margarita Maza’ national high schools, in honor of the year in which we celebrate this important woman, and these will give us 30,000 more places.”
Flexible and comprehensive model
The new high school curriculum is designed to:
Reduce the workload for those who do not want long days at school.
To offer academic, socio-emotional and vocational support .
To promote cultural, artistic, sporting and recreational activities .
Rodríguez Mora added: “ This flexible and comprehensive plan is for everyone who, for whatever reason, dropped out of school at some point. We want them to come back and get involved in the process .”
Enrolled students will receive a “Benito Juárez” scholarship while participating in this program, and young people between the ages of 15 and 17 who have not completed secondary school will be able to obtain their certificate as part of the support.
University tutors and professional profiles
The program will feature mentors —university students nearing graduation or recent graduates—who will provide academic, socio-emotional, and vocational support. Participation in scientific, artistic, cultural, sporting, and recreational activities will also be encouraged .
A call for applications will be published in May for tutors, who will receive official training in teaching and social intervention , under the National Tutoring Program .
The professional profiles of this model encompass: social sciences, exact sciences, humanities and arts .
Expansion of coverage and national strategy
The undersecretary estimated that the Margarita Maza National High School will create 30,000 new places , adding to the 80,000 already planned for upper secondary education this year. This strategy is part of the “Youth Transforming Mexico” program , which aims to encourage continued education and promote the return of young people who have dropped out of school.
“We miss you in the classroom” campaign
Additionally, the “We Miss You in the Classroom” campaign was announced , aimed at reintegrating students from the third year of secondary school through high school. Rodríguez Mora stated:
“ We want all the children who are in school to stay, and if anyone has left, we will create the conditions for them to return .”
It’s official: SEP has brought forward the Easter holidays and will combine them with the last long weekend in March: When do they start, when do they end, and why are they different this year?
In the last 18 months , more than 150,000 places have been created in high school nationwide, reinforcing the school retention strategy.
“Gertrudis Bocanegra” Scholarship and Financial Support
During the same conference, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the “Gertrudis Bocanegra” scholarship , part of the Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice , will reach one million beneficiaries in higher education. The funds come from taxes paid by businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego , the mayor emphasized.
“All of this funding comes from the payment of a person who finally paid their taxes,” he noted, highlighting the expansion of financial support for young students.
The Margarita Maza National High School represents a flexible and comprehensive educational model designed to meet the needs of young people seeking alternatives to traditional schooling, supported by scholarships, university tutors, and complementary activities . This initiative strengthens upper secondary education, promotes school retention, and contributes to the inclusion and holistic development of Mexican youth .
