Despite the fact that this morning President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked the authorities to reopen schools in Campeche and Chiapas , because they are the states that are in the color “ green ” (low risk of contagion) at the epidemiological traffic light, it seems that this may not be possible.

And it is that to return to face- to- face classes , all teachers must first be vaccinated against the coronavirus (COVID-19). This was stated tonight by Alfonso Cepeda Salas , general secretary of the National Union of Education Workers ( SNTE ).

In an interview for Grupo Fórmula , Cepeda Salas pointed out that in Campeche, the SNTE has 25 thousand teachers counted and in Chiapas between 45 thousand and 48 thousand.

For his part, Pedro Gómez Bamaca , leader of Section VII of the National Coordinator of Education Workers ( CNTE ), assured in videoconference that there are no conditions for returning to face-to-face classes in Chiapas , since the local government does not guarantee what is necessary so that the risk of contagion is minimized, so it would be irresponsible to summon infants and young people to face-to-face classes.

He explained that schools have to receive brooms, chlorine, soaps, disinfectants, masks, gloves , among other supplies; especially in those that are located in the mountains, the jungle and other communities where there is high marginalization.

The CNTE added that the government may agree with what the president said but "in the end it is the parents who will decide whether or not their children return to face-to-face classes."

The return to classes will be next January 11 , virtually and with the help of the Learn at Home program and the activities defined by each school.

Esteban Moctezuma Barragán , head of the Ministry of Public Education ( SEP ), emphasized that the return to face-to-face classes will take place in each state when the epidemiological traffic light is green and as long as the state authorities agree.

The return to classes involves more than 25 million students and one million 225 thousand 341 teachers , who are distributed in more than 230 thousand public and private schools in the country.

Currently, basic education students have not attended face-to-face classes for almost 10 months.

According to the most recent update of the Ministry of Health (Ssa), Campeche registers 37 active cases of COVID-19 , while Chiapas 108 ; that is, people who had symptoms in the last 14 days.

Regarding hospital availability, Campeche has only 5% of occupied general beds and 2% in beds with ventilators; while Chiapas has 6 and 4%, respectively.

Regarding the national panorama, Mexico added 11,271 new infections and 1,065 deaths due to SARS-CoV-2 . This means that until this Tuesday, January 5, 2021, the coronavirus has left a trace of 1,466,490 accumulated positive cases and 128,822 deaths.
