AACRAO serves education professionals worldwide as a vital part of its vision and mission. As such, membership is available to individuals and institutions outside the U.S. Whether one person is looking to build their skills and support their own career advancement, or the entire campus or organization wants to gain the benefits, AACRAO offers a multitude of ways to create a culture of collaboration, learning, and strengthening lasting global relationships.

While AACRAO has seen the number of member institutions rise and fall throughout the years, we have not seen drastic changes that would be cause for concern. Industry trends, including budget cuts at existing member institutions, institutional closures or mergers, and administrative policies (internal and external), can affect these numbers. Nevertheless, AACRAO continues to assess its offerings and survey members directly to ensure we’re providing the support, guidance, and advocacy needed from Alabama to Wyoming. Members by State
While institutional rosters have increased, membership rarely sees large swings in the numbers. Flat dues rates were implemented for the 2024-2025 membership term, allowing an unlimited number of people to be added to an institution’s roster at no additional cost. Faculty and staff in administrative roles (or who take on those duties day to day) can gain access to all of AACRAO’s offerings in a few easy steps, while keeping budgets in mind. No need to sacrifice or share accounts. Truly, the limit does not exist (that we’ve seen so far)!
But whether your institution has tens or hundreds of staff, our goal remains to give the most people the most opportunities to better themselves and their work one member at a time. Ask your campus colleagues, “Have you joined our membership roster yet?”

If we were to include the percentages of those who did not report on these demographics, those that did respond would only make up a quarter of the chart. A persistent issue when collecting any voluntary data is the low response rate. And while it’s clear AACRAO attracts a wide variety of individuals who identify in different ways, there’s still around 76% of people who are slipping through the cracks; a few cannot accurately reflect the many. Identity and representation are often talked about, leading to updating language and changing ideas of what it means to be a part of a community.
AACRAO Caucuses are national networking and identity-based affinity groups intended to promote belonging and visibility in the professional field of Higher Education. Members can join more than one Caucus and meet with their peers monthly during Caucus Gatherings and stay connected in the Exchange online community forum.

Of the eight administrative areas of responsibility that AACRAO offers resources for, a majority of our members work in Records & Registration, Admissions Operations, and Enrollment Management. You might say these professionals put the R A O in AACRAO; we wouldn’t be the association we are without them (AAC!). However, just as it takes more than 2 or 3 people to (functionally) run an office, the higher education community thrives when all these areas come together, share, experience, learn, collaborate, and advocate for the work towards student success.

The Institutional Classification is a descriptive tool that organizes the landscape of American colleges and universities into groupings of similar types of institutions. Historically, the Basic Classification organized most institutions primarily by academic program concentration or the highest degree awarded.
