New Law Includes Sexual Assault Provisions for Colleges
March 05, 2013
The U.S. House of Representatives approved the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 last week, reports the New York Times. The bill includes the Campus SaVE Act, a provision that would require more crime reporting and sexual assault prevention measures.
The House’s vote to pass the bipartisan Senate version of the bill ends a long, contentious political battle over whether to expand protections to include LGBT, Native American and immigrant victims, according to Inside Higher Ed.
Under the SaVE Act, colleges would be required to report instances of dating violence and stalking in addition to other crimes that are already reported under the Clery Act. Institutions must also strengthen procedures for notifying victims of their legal rights and maintain campus-wide policies for addressing and preventing sexual assault.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that President Obama intends to sign the bill into law on Thursday.
