Dear Readers,
The giving season is almost here. Many articles in this issue show how partnership works: each partner gives something different to an undertaking, but all have a stake in what becomes of it. A longer-term question is: What or who does it take to help sustain it? Can you recall when you felt most appreciated or valued, and whether that feeling came from contributing as part of a group or from having your contribution stand apart? I don’t expect the answer to be the same for everyone. But I feel this tension within the word “partner” because the tension lives even within its origin. Rooted in the Latin “pars,” meaning “a part or share,” it evolved from an Old French word for a joint owner or heir. Even something divided among individuals nevertheless belongs to them collectively.
