A data breach through a third-party vendor exposed the personal information of 79,000 California State University students in late August, officials with the Chancellor’s Office confirmed Tuesday.
The CSU Chancellor’s Office in Long Beach said the breach — which included information such as sexual orientation, gender, email and mailing addresses — was discovered Aug. 28, affecting students at eight CSU campuses who had enrolled in a required sexual assault training program. The affected campuses included Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles.
In a statement, the chancellor’s office said officials took immediate action to safeguard student information, adding that affected students have been contacted by the vendor, a San Diego-based company called We End Violence.
The breach did not include Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers or credit card data, according to the chancellor’s office.
In addition to the local campuses, students were also affected at San Diego State, Sonoma State, CSU Channel Islands, and one student at CSU Maritime Academy in Vallejo.
