Writing a strategic enrollment plan can be overwhelming, but a good plan is essential to any higher education institution. Involving the right people on campus and ensuring that the plan is developed on the basis of facts and relevant data are critical. Once the goals of the plan are determined, building a model for testing various enrollment scenarios can be especially helpful as long as the underlying assumptions about projected enrollment trends, expenditures, and revenues are accurate.

Chuck Knepfle is Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management at Clemson University where he oversees the university’s admissions, financial aid, and registrar’s offices. However, financial aid has been his primary career. Knepfle served as the director of financial aid at both Clemson and at his alma mater, Miami University (where he earned his B.S. in Systems Analysis and an M.B.A. in Management). He has frequent interactions with the president, provost, vice presidents, and academic deans as they strategize about the right mix, size, and success of Clemson’s undergraduate student body. Knepfle has a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and his dissertation studied high school parental knowledge about college costs and its effect on their estimation of their children’s college degree completion.
