Higher education institutions face increasingly complex student privacy challenges that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 was never designed to anticipate. From artificial intelligence analytics and cloud-based learning platforms to immigration enforcement requests and education delivered inside correctional facilities, compliance today demands far more than a working knowledge of the statute itself.
This six-part webinar series draws directly from Navigating the Evolving Landscape of Student Privacy under FERPA (AACRAO, 2026), authored by Phillip Dale King and Michelle Mott. The series synthesizes more than a decade of federal guidance, enforcement actions, and policy interpretations from the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office (SPPO) and its Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), translating complex legal requirements into actionable strategies that registrars, compliance officers, and institutional leaders can put to work immediately.
Each webinar covers one chapter of the book and stands on its own, though participants are encouraged to attend all six sessions for the fullest understanding of the current FERPA compliance landscape.
Together, these sessions provide a balanced view of the considerations and opportunities when using AI in our professions. Through peer examples, attendees will explore practical uses of AI while also considering responsible implementation, transparency, staff readiness, and institutional context. The series supports members’ professional development by helping them build AI literacy and identify ideas they can evaluate for use on their own campuses.
