The Balearic Islands Government Council approved on Friday the decree regulating the Baccalaureate of Excellence, a new program aimed at students with high academic performance. It will come into effect in the 2026-2027 academic year, as announced yesterday by the Government spokesperson, Antoni Costa.

The decree establishes the framework for promoting centers and classrooms of excellence. These centers will offer a pathway tailored to the needs of students who wish to “deepen their scientific, technological, humanistic, or artistic knowledge,” as the Baccalaureate of Excellence will be available in three tracks: science and technology; humanities and social sciences; and arts (visual arts, image, and design).
The program opens the door to completing high school with a dual degree. Students will be able to take some courses online to obtain the degree in two formats simultaneously, a path that already complies with current state regulations.
The methodological model proposed by the Ministry of Education in the decree includes laboratory practices in the science and technology baccalaureate ; the study of texts and the production of essays in the humanities and social sciences modality; and artistic creation in the arts modality.
The program aims to incorporate working methods similar to those used in universities, promoting research, critical thinking, independent work, analytical and synthesis skills, and rigorous communication. These skills are developed at a level of specialization “higher than that required to successfully pass university entrance exams.”
The Decree also establishes monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to guarantee the quality of the Program , including the possibility for the Institute of Evaluation and Quality to organize external tests without academic consequences. The Government emphasizes that, in addition to being a proposal for improving educational quality, it is a tool for responding to diversity, “which also exists among high-achieving students.”
