National tests and exams for elementary and secondary students will be carried out directly on computers in 2025, according to a plan by the Instituto de Avaliação Educativa (IAVE) that this year starts with a pilot project in some schools.
IAVE had already carried out some “small experiments” in carrying out digital tests but now, through funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), it will move forward with the DAVE project – Dematerialization of External Assessment, which predicts that within three years all compulsory education students take the national tests and exams in digital format, a source from IAVE told Lusa.
The model will be tested in June in some schools, which are currently being selected to participate in the pilot project. The sample experience will be with some students who are now taking the assessment tests.
In the next academic year, the assessment tests will already be carried out in digital format by all students in the 2nd, 5th and 8th grades. Left out, only the Artistic Expression and Physical Education tests will remain.
In the academic year 2023/2024, it will be the turn of the 9th grade students to also take the final cycle tests in digital format. And in the following year, according to the IAVE calendar, the idea is that secondary school students will also exchange the pen for a keyboard to take the national exams.
The IAVE source recalled that the idea is not new, but “requires a lot of investment”, which will be possible through the PRR, where an amount of 12 million euros is entered for the dematerialization of tests and exams, according to the Jornal News in today’s edition.
IAVE recalled that in 2018 the first application of an assessment test in digital format was carried out, having selected the 8th grade Mathematics assessment test. .
At the time, the test was carried out in double format, paper and digital, and the test in digital format was carried out by about 2,500 students from all over the country. .
The following year, in 2019, a pilot project took place, in partnership with the National Examinations Jury (JNE) and some schools, with the aim of digitizing the assessment tests and performing the classification in electronic format.
In January 2021, also in electronic form, a diagnostic study of the learning of students in the 3rd, 6th and 9th grades was carried out.
According to IAVE, this project is not “a mere transposition of analogical and traditional methodologies, didactics and assessment techniques to digital support, but a paradigm shift”, which involves “integrating and dematerializing all the procedures inherent to the external evaluation of learning, from the organizational and logistical process, to the processes of preparation of tests, their application and classification”.
