Melanie Gottlieb is Executive Director of AACRAO and the first woman to lead the association in its history. She believes higher education must meet this transformational moment when learners move between institutions, across borders, and between work and learning. Institutions are being called to recognize what learners know wherever they learned it, helping them to earn meaningful credentials that support individual social and economic mobility. The association has framed this work as Learning Mobility, and is working to support shifts in policy, practice and technology across the industry. Over more than four years as Executive Director, she has positioned AACRAO and the professionals it represents at the center of that shift.
Melanie’s perspective is both global and practical. It is shaped by her background as a practitioner, her work leading the Groningen Declaration Network, UNESCO, and in AACRAO partnerships with peer associations in Canada and Mexico. She speaks and writes regularly about learning mobility, the evolving role of registrars and enrollment leaders, and the responsible use of technology and data to serve learners.
Melanie came to the national office after 18 years as an AACRAO member working in records and registration, enrollment management, and international recruitment and credential evaluation. She then served nearly six years as Deputy Director. Her volunteer leadership roles include Vice President for International Education on the AACRAO Board of Directors. She is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), and holds an MA in Information Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia and a BA in History/American Studies from Marlboro College.

Melanie leads AACRAO staff, operations, products, and services in support of the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. She also builds the national and international partnerships that advance learning mobility and the transformation of higher education.
