The top Republican on the Senate Education Committee effectively killed on Thursday all hope for a highly anticipated overhaul this year of the law governing the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities, paving the way for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to wield her deregulatory power.
The committee chairman, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, said at a New York Times education conference in New York that the Senate would not produce promised higher education legislation this year, and blamed Democrats for the delay.
“The Democrats won’t do it,” he said, adding, “They want to wait until next year to see if they’re in better shape politically, but I keep telling them, ‘I can take notes and do to you what you did to me, even if I’m in the minority.’”
