New ACCESS Portal Seeks to Improve the College Application Process in Arkansas 

The Arkansas Department of Education launched its ACCESS Portal on August 18, 2026, a universal college application system directed by the Arkansas ACCESS Act that Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a year earlier. Thirty-four public and eight private colleges and universities are currently accepting applications through the portal, which lets students apply to up to five participating schools at no cost while automatically populating transcripts, GPAs, and test scores, and which will relay provisional admissions decisions and financial aid information directly to applicants. The portal is currently open to enrolled public and charter school students applying for the 2027-2028 academic year, with access phased in for private school students the following year and home-schooled students and GED recipients the year after that. The ACCESS Act also overhauled how the state funds higher education, tying institutional funding to a return-on-investment metric that weighs schools’ success serving underrepresented students and whether their credentials align with state workforce needs.
