The American Council on Education released an analysis of the Department of Education’s latest student loan nonrepayment data to help institutions assess potential future cohort default rate risks as federal loan repayment normalizes after the pandemic payment pause ends. The data identify borrowers who entered repayment between January 2020 and May 2025 and were more than 90 days delinquent, including those in default. With the Department resuming official CDR calculations, ACE notes that institutions can use this data to identify potential repayment challenges and inform outreach to former students at risk of delinquency or default.
