Recent changes to federal regulations, as outlined in the Federal Register under “Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization: The Secretary’s Recognition of Accrediting Agencies: Institutional Eligibility Under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as Amended, Student Assistance General Provisions,” have significant implications for both institutions and accreditors when it comes to the transfer of credit process.

These proposed regulations will require institutions to have policies that award undergraduate transfer credit for successfully completed coursework from institutions accredited by a federally recognized agency, unless the institution provides a course-specific academic rationale for the denial and an opportunity to appeal the decision within 15 calendar days.
