OVERVIEW

Students have traditionally been underrepresented at election time. Many believe that young people do not vote because of apathy towards voting. However, recent studies have shown that the reason given by most young adults for not voting is that they did not have good information, including not knowing if they can vote where they go to school. Missing registration deadlines and not knowing how to get registered are other barriers to voting that students face. However, college campuses are one of the best places to reach young voters to give them information on how to register and what they need to have their votes counted on Election Day. College administrators can play a big role in helping students get registered - with little effort. As you know, the Higher Education Act (HEA) requires schools to give their "best effort" in providing students access to voter registration forms and information.

We invite you to learn more about how to comply with the HEA and how to help your students.

Ben Hovland, Senior Attorney with the Fair Elections Legal Network and formerly deputy counsel in the Missouri Secretary of State's office, will lead a discussion on the traditional barriers in voting that students face, review what colleges have been doing to comply with the HEA's requirement to provide voting information and what are some of the best practices, as well as new opportunities utilizing technology to easily comply with the HEA while increasing student access to voter registration forms and information.
