The oral national exams in grades 6 and 9 will be held between November 2 and December 4, 2026. The written exams will follow in the spring of 2027, while grade 3 will have its exam period from March 15 to May 21. Here are the exam dates for the entire 2026/2027 academic year, divided by grade and subject, as well as the upper secondary school autumn and spring exams and the published dates for municipal adult exams.
The guide applies to the autumn semester 2026 and the spring semester 2027. For municipal adults, the earliest date for use of different test versions and their expiry date is stated. Your school determines which test date applies to you.
The dates are based on the Swedish National Agency for Education’s exam dates , checked on September 5, 2026. At that time, there was not yet a complete published table of new upper secondary municipal adult exams for spring 2027.
National exams in year 3 spring 2027
In grade 3, national exams are mandatory in mathematics and Swedish or Swedish as a second language. Both subjects have the same exam period.
Subject Trial period
Mathematics March 15–May 21, 2027
Swedish or Swedish as a second language March 15–May 21, 2027
The school decides when the various partial tests are conducted within the period. There is therefore no common mathematics day or Swedish day for all third graders in Sweden. Oral components are also included in the test period.
Ask the teacher which days apply to your child’s class. The tests are assessed part by part and are not added together to form a common test grade in year 3. The results help the school see what knowledge the student has and where support may be needed.
National exams in year 6, academic year 2026/2027
In grade 6, compulsory national exams are held in Swedish or Swedish as a second language, English and mathematics. The oral parts are in the autumn and the written parts in the spring.
In the tables, the abbreviation sva is used for Swedish as a second language. The student takes the test in the Swedish subject that the student is studying.

The period covers weeks 45–49. The school schedules the oral partial exams within these weeks, so different students may have different exam days.
Written national exams in year 6 spring 2027
The school determines the start time. Year 6 does not have a nationally set start time for exams.

Swedish/Swa B2 and C2: reading and writing Thursday, April 29, 2027
Mathematics B and C Tuesday, May 11, 2027
Mathematics D and E Thursday, May 13, 2027
The Swedish test includes both reading and writing on both test days. On April 27, the reading assignment is a fictional text and the writing assignment is a narrative text. On April 29, the reading assignment is a non-fiction text and poems, as well as the writing assignment is a non-fiction text.
Mathematics is also divided into two days. When several subtests are on the same line, they must be completed on that test day, with the planning and breaks announced by the school.
National exams in grade 9, academic year 2026/2027
Grade 9 includes Swedish or Swedish as a second language, English, mathematics, one NO subject and one SO subject.

SO B Tuesday, May 4, 2027
Mathematics A and B Wednesday, May 12, 2027
Mathematics C and D Friday, May 14, 2027
Which NO and SO substance will it be?
Each school is assigned a subject in each group:
Subject group One of these subjects is being tested
NO Biology, physics or chemistry
SO Geography, history, religious studies or social studies
The students therefore take one NO test and one SO test, not tests in all seven subjects. All students at the same school take tests in the same assigned subject within each group. The school does not choose itself.
The school normally learns about the subject about a month before the exam date and can then inform the students.
The corresponding test dates also apply to the Sami school and the special school. In the special school, applicable parts of the compulsory school test are used in grades 4, 7 and 10.
National upper secondary school exams in autumn 2026
The upper secondary school national exam is held at the end of a course or subject level. There are exam dates in both the autumn and spring, so that the school can use the opportunity that suits when the education in the course or level ends.
All fixed exam dates start at 9:00 AM.

Mathematics – continuation level 2, A–C December 16
In English, C is the writing section and B is the reading and listening comprehension. The writing section is therefore completed first, even though it is called C.
In Swedish/SVA level 1, B is reading comprehension and C is writing. In Swedish 3/SVA 3, A is the written test. The three mathematics tests are conducted on the same day.
National upper secondary school exams in spring 2027
Spring’s regular exam days also start at 9:00 am .

English 5, Mathematics 3 and the new level names
During the academic year, both the older Gy11 course system and subject levels according to Gy25 will be used. Therefore, the course name in your study plan may differ from the exam name in the date table.
Older course name Designation in the sample tables
English 5 English level 1
English 6 English level 2
Swedish 1/sva 1 Swedish/Swa level 1
Mathematics 1a, 1b, 1c Mathematics level 1a, 1b, 1c
Mathematics 2a, 2b, 2c Mathematics level 2a, 2b, 2c
Mathematics 3b, 3c Mathematics – continuation level 1b, 1c
Mathematics 4 Mathematics – continuation level 2
National tests designed for Gy25 can be used by students who read according to Gy11 and vice versa. The test called Swedish 3 or Swedish as a Second Language 3 can also be used by students who read according to Gy25.
Which high school exams are mandatory?
In university preparatory programs, national exams should normally be used at the highest final level in the study path in English, mathematics, mathematics–continuation and Swedish or Swedish as a second language.
There are exceptions for English level 3 and Swedish/SVA level 2. If mathematics continuation is included in the study path, the mathematics level 2 exam is not mandatory.
In vocational programs, tests are to be used at both the introductory and the highest final level in Swedish/Sva, English and mathematics, with the same exceptions. Which levels the student actually studies therefore matters. The option of higher levels may also involve additional mandatory tests.
For Gy11, the same principle applies to courses. The exceptions are English 7 and Swedish/Swa 2.
National exams are not mandatory in introductory programs. The school may still choose to use them and must then follow the rules for the exams. Ask your teacher which exams are included in your particular study path.
National exams for municipal adults 2026/2027
At upper secondary level, national exams are taken once at the end of the courses or levels where the exam is mandatory. The programs end at different times, which means that students do not have a common national exam day.
Each test version instead has a first and last allowed date. The school books the student’s test within that period. There are both tests that have been developed for municipal adults and tests that are also used at upper secondary school.
New municipal adult education exams in autumn 2026
Sample First allowed date
English level 1, B and C September 7, 2026
English level 2, B and C September 7, 2026
Mathematics level 1a, 1b, 1c, A–C September 7, 2026
On the first permitted test day, the tests may start no earlier than 9:00 a.m. If the school conducts the test on a later day, it can choose the start time.
The English oral part A can be taken from week 37, which begins on September 7. The school schedules the sessions within the allowed time for the test.
The September versions of the table may be used until 31 December 2026 .
Trial versions available for use in spring 2027
The following older exams from the spring semester 2026 are among the versions that komvux can use during the academic year. The table shows their last permitted use date.
Trial version from Spring 2026 Last day of use
Swedish/Swa level 1 April 20, 2027
Swedish 3/sva 3 April 15, 2027
Mathematics level 1a, 1b, 1c May 20, 2027
Mathematics level 2a, 2b, 2c May 19, 2027
Mathematics – continuation level 1b, 1c May 18, 2027
Mathematics – continuation level 2 May 21, 2027
These are validity periods, not your personal exam schedule. For example, the fact that mathematics level 2 can be used until May 19th does not mean that all komvuxele students will have to take the exam on that day.
As of September 5, 2026, the Swedish National Agency for Education had not yet published a complete table of new upper secondary school leaving examinations for spring 2027 on its examination dates page. Contact the education provider for information on which examination version, day and time apply to you.
Mandatory exams for upper secondary school graduates
National exams should be used when studying the following levels:
English level 1 and 2.
Mathematics level 1 and 2.
Mathematics – continuation levels 1 and 2.
Swedish or Swedish as a second language levels 1 and 3.
Komvux does not follow the general principle of upper secondary schools regarding exams at the highest final level. If you are studying at a level where a national exam is mandatory, the exam will be included there.
National exams in SFI 2026/2027
In municipal adult education in Swedish for immigrants, national tests are used at the end of courses B, C and D. The school determines the student’s test date within the current test version’s usage period.
No new exams will be available in the fall of 2026. Existing valid versions will be used. In the spring of 2027, new exams will be available as follows:
New SFI exam First allowed date
Exam 1, course B, C and D January 18, 2027
Exam 2, course D March 15, 2027
Exam 2, course C April 19, 2027
Exam 2, course B May 24, 2027
The dates indicate when the tests may be used. They are not common mandatory test days for all SFI students. The oral parts are also scheduled by the school.
What happens if you are sick during the national exam?
Please report sick according to the school’s usual procedure and contact your teacher. The principal will decide whether you will be allowed to take the missed exam at a later date.
There is no common national reserve date that automatically applies to all sick students. The school also needs to assess whether the test still serves as a basis for assessment. If the content is already known to the student, the result will be less reliable.
If you arrive late for the exam, the school will decide whether you can participate. You are not allowed to take the same national exam more than once.
Can the sample be moved for a trip?
Travel is not considered a special reason for postponing national exams. The same applies to workplace-based learning, study days and sports days.
However, illness, accidents, deaths or technical problems can be special reasons. It is the principal who makes the decision. A school’s decision to postpone an exam and the decision to let an individual absent student take the exam later are two different situations.
Adaptations and the importance of the test for the grade
Students who need adjustments should raise this with the school in good time. This could, for example, involve longer test times or being allowed to take the test in isolation. The adjustments that are possible depend on the subtest and what it is intended to test. A formal diagnosis is not a requirement for the implementation to be adjusted.
The principal may, for special reasons, decide to exempt a student from an entire exam or a partial exam. To receive a weighted exam grade, the student needs to complete all partial exams.
The test grade should be taken into particular consideration when the teacher assigns grades, but may not solely determine the subject or course grade. The teacher also weighs other factors. A missed national test therefore does not automatically mean an F in the subject.
Are the national exams digital or on paper in 2026/2027?
The current national exams are conducted with paper-based test material. The previous plan to introduce them into the Swedish National Agency for Education’s digital test platform is no longer valid. The government’s new mandate on digital national final exams is about upcoming exams and reforms.
At the same time, certain parts will be written on a computer during the 2026/2027 academic year:
Exam or school form How paper and computer are used
National exams in general Paper-based test material
Essays in English, Swedish and Swedish in grade 9 Should normally be written on a computer or other digital device
The same essay parts in high school and upper secondary school Should normally be written on a computer or other digital device
Writing parts in grade 6 School chooses computer or handwriting
Upper secondary school-aged adult from January 2027 The school downloads the test material and prints it out
The fact that the school downloads a test file digitally does not mean that the student takes the entire test on a digital testing platform. For upper secondary municipal adults, the distribution will change from January 2027, but the material must still be printed and handled securely.
Exceptions to the requirement to write essays on a computer require special reasons linked to the student’s needs and circumstances. Permitted aids otherwise vary between the subtests, for example when calculators are allowed in mathematics.
Mobile phones and smartwatches may not be used during national exams. The school must also prevent access to unauthorized websites and services when using computers. The rules for phones during the rest of the school day are described in the guide on the mobile phone ban at school .
National exams may not be conducted remotely. You must be on the school premises even if your education is otherwise provided remotely. For oral partial exams, the assessing teacher must be in the same premises.
