Graduates received the results of their written tests. Compared to last year, the number of failed Czech exams has doubled, and every tenth has not passed the course. Optional mathematics was a little better, which every tenth high school student did not master, but last year it was every seventh.

This year's graduates have the advantage over their predecessors that they spent most of the fourth year in school. Although some classes went to quarantine and distance learning during the year, schools were not closed by government decision as in previous years of the pandemic.
Nevertheless, during the didactic tests, the high school students burned down. In the spring examination period of 2022, 13.7% of first-year graduates failed the didactic tests of the common part of the Matura examination ( those who took the examination for the first time do not include last year's corrective dates and substitute dates, ed. Note ). Last year, graduates failed in 11.2% of cases, a year earlier it was 14.1% of graduates, Cermat said.
9.4% of first-year graduates failed the Czech language, while last year the share of unsuccessful graduates was only 4.7%. It was similar in the case of mathematics, which 10.1% of schoolchildren did not master. However, there has been an improvement compared to previous years (failure last year 16.6%, last year 15.5%).
The deterioration also occurred in high school students so popular in English. While 6.3% of first-year graduates did not pass the exam last year, this year their share increased by 0.1 percentage point.
A total of 73.7 thousand high school graduates applied for the joint part of the school-leaving examination (didactic tests) in the spring examination period. More than 70,000 (95%) of them are graduates. Together, almost 77,000 high school graduates applied for the joint and profile (oral) part of the Matura examination; for the first time, 71.9 thousand (93.4%) high school students took the exams.
As last year and this year, the Ministry of Education decided to extend the time limits for solving didactic tests. Compared to 2019 and 2020, in this spring trial period, students had 10 minutes more time for Czech language and literature (85 minutes in total), as well as for a foreign language (110 minutes in total). In mathematics, time increased by 15 minutes to 135 minutes.
Mathematics really wasn't complicated this year
Jan F., a lyceum science student, chose mathematics instead of a foreign language exam. He could also master English, but for his further direction, a high school diploma in exact sciences is better. And he did not regret his choices even after the publication of Cermat's results.
"I have 72% mathematics. At first impressions, I expected about 80%, but I succeeded, so I'm satisfied. Mathematics was really not complicated this year, "he is looking forward to graduation. He admits that he was worried about Czech after completing it, but in the end he has 64% of it, so he mastered it. "I'm just happy to have been through," he said.
At the same time, he believes in the last peak of the exam period - the oral exam. Nevertheless, he admits that he has been feeling slightly nervous for the second month in a row. "In general, I'm nervous about the whole high school diploma," admits the high school student, who, in addition to the exams themselves, was surprised by the difficulty that he suddenly had to learn much more subjects than he was used to.
"For the first time in my high school years, I have to learn more than an hour and it's harder than I expected. Anyway, I think I can handle it, "he says firmly. Oral exams are waiting for him this Wednesday.
Anastázie Ryšková also passed the written exam, but she did not want to talk specifically about her results. "I passed, which is the main thing for me. I was afraid I wouldn't make it, it was terrible and the teacher was worthless, fortunately I'm not alone, who thought it was. But I succeeded, for which I am glad that I will not have to repeat it, "said iDNES.cz.
The building construction student now has enough time to prepare for the oral exams. She wrote the last didactic test on Tuesday, May 3, and will appear before the examination commission on May 26.
"I'm learning. It's slow, but fortunately I'm able to get along and at least look at something, "laughs Ryšková. Unlike others, she is not pressed by time, so she can divide the preparation into several days.
Originally, during the day, she devoted herself to the content of the books she read, taking notes to remember, but it took so long that she had no more time for learning. He wants to switch again. "During the day I will learn and write books in the evening, I think it will be better this way," he muses.
She adds that when she is alone, she reads aloud. "It's better for me and I remember more, but it would be better with someone," he explains. She hopes that she will soon be able to find a free time window with her classmates so that they can prepare together. "But it can be done without it," he says.
Graduates are nervous and humble
"I'm nervous, but I think the fact that I haven't passed a similar exam is to blame. Everyone tells us what it looks like, we were also in the exam class, but we just have to try it for ourselves, "describes Anna Krupková, a student at the Secondary Vocational School for European Union Administration.
Even she, still a premier, feels a pre-graduation "window". "I believe that I know the basics from everything and I understand the subjects discussed enough to be able to talk about them. Yet, like everyone else, I sometimes feel like I don't know anything. It's like a roller coaster, "says the graduate, who rested while working in the field before the didactic tests.
Krupková does not spend whole days just classic memorization, she tries to add more methods to her preparation. "I look at documents as I graduate from geopolitics. Otherwise, I read the materials, I create mind maps, where I highlight the most important points and names, "he gives an insight into his preparation.
IDNES.cz collaborator Krupková is graduating on Monday, the next part is waiting for her on Wednesday.
