Briana Roades, ASCEND Cohort 5

By Autumn Walden, Editor, AACRAO Connect, Content Strategy Manager, AACRAO

Adult learners are increasingly advancing their careers through industry-specific, collaborative learning. The State of Continuing Education 2025 Report from UPCEA notes a measurable rise in cross-unit collaboration and a growing emphasis on learning experiences designed around working professionals and institutional needs, conditions that closely mirror ASCEND cohort-based leadership development. That national trend is reflected in this ASCEND Cohort 5 alum's recent internal promotion. In a field where career advancement may involve either moving on or growing in place, Briana RoadesAssociate Director of UF Online, expanded her strategic enrollment management portfolio from within her institution—building new skills, confidence, and institutional influence through cohort learning, applied coursework, and individualized coaching.

Many institutions have invested $2,550 per individual for a professional development experience valued at more than $7,200. ASCEND delivers comprehensive leadership development, generating institutional returns through evidence-based SEM practices, coaching, participation in a national conference, and sustained monthly learning. Don't miss the January 9 deadline to apply for the next ASCEND cohort

In this interview, Roades shares how ASCEND supported her advancement, which learning experiences mattered most, and advice for professionals considering their next step.

Looking back on your time in the ASCEND Program, how have you incorporated your professional experience together with a broader SEM portfolio?

I recently changed positions at the University of Florida. While in the ASCEND program, I served as the Associate Director of UF Online Enrollment Services, overseeing recruitment, admissions, and student services for fully online undergraduate students. In August 2025, I transitioned into a new role as the Associate Director of UF Online. Although the title change is subtle, the scope of my work has expanded significantly. I now oversee student success, student belonging and community, and academic operations for our fully online undergraduate population.

Much of my career has focused on the front end of the student journey—recruitment, admissions, and onboarding—but my new role allows me to focus on the next phase of retention, persistence, and degree completion. This shift has enabled me to apply the SEM framework I developed through ASCEND to the entire student lifecycle. I now approach my work more holistically, understanding how enrollment management connects to academic success, engagement, and long-term outcomes. My ASCEND experience and my new role have brought SEM full circle for me, and I’m thrilled to continue this next chapter in my professional journey.

What were some unique aspects of your upskilling journey?

I’ve always been intentional about expanding my knowledge and pursuing professional development opportunities. The ASCEND program deepened my understanding of SEM strategy and leadership while strengthening my analytical and strategic thinking skills. What made my upskilling journey unique was the timing. I completed ASCEND just as I was transitioning into a new role that aligned perfectly with what I’d been learning.

Through ASCEND,

  • I became more confident in strategic planning, data-informed decision-making, and change management.
  • I learned to approach institutional challenges from a systems perspective rather than through the narrower lens of my immediate area.
  • I gained perspective that prepared me to step into a broader leadership role with a strong foundation in collaboration, communication, and cross-campus partnership.
What advice would you offer to other mid-career enrollment professionals considering a leadership path like yours?

Walk through open doors. A trusted colleague and mentor once told me that professional development is a personal responsibility, and that has always stuck with me. Seek out opportunities, advocate for yourself, and make a compelling case for why your growth benefits both you and your institution.

Be comfortable being uncomfortable. Growth rarely happens in familiar spaces. Network, even if it doesn’t come naturally (I say this as an introvert myself). Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you.

Adopt a growth mindset. Never stop learning, stay curious, and always keep students at the center of everything you do.

Are there any other AACRAO Courses/Training or other professional development resources you'd recommend?

I highly recommend the AACRAO Conference for Strategic Enrollment Management for anyone seeking to strengthen their understanding of SEM principles and connect with peers tackling similar challenges.

The AACRAO SEM Endorsement Program and courses in data-informed decision-making and strategic planning are also excellent next steps for those wanting to deepen their SEM expertise.

Beyond AACRAO, I’ve found great value in UPCEA for online and adult learner engagement. Both offer insights that complement the SEM framework by focusing on the student experience and success.

Anything you'd like to add?

ASCEND was an incredible experience that broadened my perspective and provided the foundation to pursue my new role with a more comprehensive understanding of the entire student journey. I’m grateful for the program’s emphasis on leadership development and strategic thinking. From attending my first SEM Conference and learning about ASCEND in 2022 to now applying those lessons daily in my work, I can say without hesitation that the program has been transformational in my career and professional growth.
