OVERVIEW:

This webinar will review the different classifications of offenses, the difference between criminal and non criminal convictions and how crime classifications vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. We will discuss the many different ways that states treat young people who are arrested. This section will also cover sealing and expungement and how these affect criminal history reporting.

This webinar is geared towards registrars, admissions officers, student services and records administrators, enrollment professionals, and directors of student affairs and student counseling.

Presenters:

Alan Rosenthal - Co-Director of Justice Strategies, the research, training and policy initiative of the Center for Community Alternatives

Alan Rosenthal is a criminal defense and civil rights attorney with over 35 years of experience. He is a graduate of Syracuse University College of Law. He is currently the Co-Director of Justice Strategies, the research, training and policy initiative of the Center for Community Alternatives. He has lectured on such topics as “Race and the Criminal Justice System,” “Treatment Courts,” “Community Justice,” and “Reentry and Reintegration.” He co-authored the CCA publication Sentencing for Dollars: The Financial Consequences of a Criminal Conviction and The Use of Criminal History Records in College Admissions Reconsidered and working papers, Unlocking the Potential of Reentry and Reintegration and Closing the Doors To Higher Education: Another Collateral Consequence of a Criminal Conviction.

Alan has presented training for lawyers for many of the Public Defender Offices and Bar Associations throughout New York. He served on the New York State Bar Association Special Committee on Collateral Consequences of Criminal Convictions and is one of the co-authors of their report and recommendations on Collateral Consequences of Criminal Proceedings, “Re-Entry and Reintegration: The Road to Public Safety.” He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Alan is on the advisory boards for both Reentry Net and ICARE (Interfaith Coalition of Advocates for Reentry and Employment). In March 2006 he was honored with the Outstanding Service to the Criminal Bar Award by the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Patricia Warth - Co-Director of Justice Strategies of the Center for Community Alternatives

Patricia Warth joined the Center for Community Alternatives in January 2008, as Co-Director of Justice Strategies. She has devoted her legal career to criminal justice issues. After graduating from Cornell Law School in 1996 and clerking for a federal district court judge, Ms. Warth worked for the New York State Capital Defender Office, representing individuals charged with first degree murder and facing a possible sentence of death. In 2005, after New York's highest court invalidated the death penalty in New York, Ms. Warth spent a semester at Syracuse Law School's Office of Clinical Legal Education as practitioner-in-residence, and then spent two years as Managing Attorney of the Buffalo, NY office of Prisoner's Legal Services of New York. She has delivered presentations and trainings on sentencing, drug law reform, defending sex offense cases, early release programs, and the life-long consequences of a criminal for the New York State Defender Association, the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, local bar associations, and other legal and non-legal organizations.
