The State Examinations Commission will issue the 2022 Junior Cert results on Wednesday 23 November.

This year's results will be available in schools on 23 November and candidates can also access their results online from 4pm on that date.

The delay is being blamed, in part, on a shortage of examiners and the prioritisation given to marking the Leaving Certificate.

A spokesperson for the SEC said: "The SEC appreciates that candidates and their parents/guardians may be disappointed that these results are issuing later than normal.

"This has arisen due to a combination of factors which include a later issue date for the Leaving Certificate results and, most especially, the impact of a shortage of teachers to mark the examinations over the summer marking period.

"In advance of the 2023 examinations, the SEC will be reviewing with all of the stakeholders how best to ensure the availability of teachers in the required numbers to complete this important examination work."

It is now more than four months since students began their exams.

This year's Junior Cert was the first to be held after Junior Cycle tests were cancelled for two years running during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some 68,408 candidates took exams in 21 different subjects, a 5% increase on the number of candidates in 2019.

The SEC said the number of teachers available to mark exams has been "extremely challenging" for a number of years prior to Covid.

Announcement brings clarity - Foley

Minister for Education Norma Foley said the announcement brings clarity, while acknowledging the frustration that the delay caused for students and staff.

"I think it's important we do have a date and we do have clarity," she said.

Speaking on her way into a Cabinet meeting, the minister said she welcomes the announcement, but also noted the challenges they have faced with two sittings of the Leaving Certificate.

She said they are also obliged to issue the Leaving Cert appeals in advance of the Junior Cycle.

However, she said she is "conscious" of a need to do things differently and had asked officials in her department for a root-and-branch review in terms of timings, the issuing of results and how to attract more exam correctors into the system.

She said there has been a particular challenge for the SEC to encourage more people to engage in the correcting process.

"That work is under way now," she said.

The minister said they will seek to ensure the Junior Cert results will be delivered in a more timely manner in future.

'Stressful experience' for students - ASTI

The President of the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland has said the waiting for the Junior Cert results has been a "very stressful experience" for students.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Miriam Duggan welcomed the fact that a date has now been set for their release.

"A five month gap between sitting the exams and getting the results, it's not good on very many levels," she said.

"It creates problems for students who are leaving the school for apprenticeships.

"It creates problems for students moving straight into fifth year, because they're trying to choose between ordinary and higher level subjects.

"And it's a problem for all students who sat the exams and deserve to know they did," she added.
