While the Trump administration hopes a ban on H-1B and J- visas will result in additional employment opportunities for Americans, many are concerned the impacts will be a net negative for schools, the job market, and the economy in general in the United States. Examples provided in this article highlight the presence of immigrants or second generation immigrants in science/technology labs, and how such a visa halt would change the makeup of these labs/industries.
Not all visas are subject to the new restrictions. Optional Practical Training (OPT) visas, F-1 visas for students arriving in the fall, and those H-1B workers who are already in the country are not to be impacted by the proclamation.
