The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will no longer issue hard copy migration certificates for students passing Class X and Class XII examinations from 2025 onwards. This move aims to streamline the certificate issuance process and promote digital documentation. Students will now receive only digital copies of their migration certificates through DigiLocker, an official digital platform.
The decision follows a directive from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which has stated that digital certificates issued by boards like CBSE will be accepted for admission to higher education institutions. In addition, CBSE will not charge any fees for migration certificates along with examination fees from the 2025 examinations.
Migration certificate changes and digital acceptance
Previously, students received both a hard copy and a digital version of their migration certificate after passing their exams. However, with this new policy, the physical migration certificate will be discontinued entirely. Students must rely on the digital copy stored securely in their DigiLocker accounts. The hard copy will still be available temporarily for students needing it during the transition period, but only upon request through the CBSE's Duplicate Academic Document System (DADS) on the official CBSE website.
This change has been approved by the CBSE Examination Committee and ratified by its Governing Body. It applies to all students of Class X and Class XII who clear their exams from 2025 onwards. The digital certificate will be valid for admission to other educational institutions, simplifying the process and reducing paperwork.
What is DigiLocker and why use it?DigiLocker is a government-backed digital storage platform that allows citizens to store and access official documents electronically. For students, DigiLocker offers a convenient way to access their mark sheets, passing certificates, and migration certificates from anywhere, without the need for physical documents. This secure platform ensures easy retrieval and verification by educational institutions and other agencies.
