The U.S. House Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee met on Wednesday to discuss strengthening accountability in higher education to better serve students and taxpayers. The hearing is the second in a series of five planned by Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Ranking Member Virginia Foxx (R-NC) in an effort to comprehensively overhaul the Higher Education Act.
Rep. Susan Davis (D-CA), chair of the subcommittee, plans to focus on for-profit colleges, according to prepared remarks, saying that "while some say there are 'bad actors' in every sector, history clearly demonstrates that predatory behavior has only been rampant in the for-profit sector."
Davis also intends to go after the Education Department, which she said has "consistently failed to fulfill the federal government's critical role in keeping colleges accountable, particularly for-profit colleges" under the Trump administration.
Nick Hillman, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Melissa Emrey-Arras, director of education, workforce and income security issues at GAO; Noe Ortega, Pennsylvania's deputy secretary of education; and Barbara Brittingham, president of the New England Commission of Higher Education, testified before the subcommittee.
