UMass-Amherst to Recruit More Out-of-State Students

The University of Massachusetts-Amherst hopes to increase undergraduate enrollment by 15 percent, to 22,500 students, over the next decade by aggressively recruiting out-of-state students, reports The Boston Globe.

Chancellor Robert Holub is seeking new income sources to increase the size and prominence of its faculty, update buildings, and invest in scientific research. Out-of-state students pay twice as much in tuition and fees as in-state students – $21,929 annually, compared to $10,232.

The number of in-state students will remain steady, at 16,000. The number of out-of-state students, who currently make up 20 percent of undergraduates, is expected to roughly double, to 6,500 students, or nearly 30 percent of undergraduates, by 2020.

By comparison, 35 percent of undergraduates at the University of Michigan are from other states, and 6.3 percent at the University of California Berkeley are from out of state.

Beginning next year, U-Mass-Amherst will enroll an extra 300 out-of-state students a year, bringing an additional $4 million annually, the Globe reported. After four years, the university will assess the success of its recruitment efforts and determine whether new residence halls will be necessary.

U-Mass has mobilized a national network of graduates to help recruit students. These alumni will focus on states bordering Massachusetts and others along the East coast, including New Jersey and Washington DC. In addition, the university will award partial scholarships in specialty programs like engineering.
