Colleges in Arizona are expanding their online course offerings, reports The Associated Press. Pima College and the University of Arizona are adding online classes and also increasing the number of programs offered entirely through the Web. In fall 2001, Pima College had 589 students taking online classes. By last fall, that number increased to 3,739. Enrollment in online-only programs at Pima increased from 132 to 1,481 during that same period. At Northern Arizona University, 2,300 students were enrolled in online classes during the past academic year. That is an increase from 772 in 2004. At the University of Arizona, 5,384 students were enrolled in online classes during the 2005-06 academic year—an increase from the 3,477 students enrolled in 2002-03. UA recently introduced a Web-based digital information management certificate and a certificate in gerontology. In addition, UA has put programs such as the doctorate in nursing, its nursing degree and master’s in optical science online.
