Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, Pennsylvania, announced on Friday, October 21, that it is opening its junior college and postsecondary military training programs to women, beginning in fall 2006. The high school academy will remain for boys only. “This decision makes sense and is clearly the right thing to do,” said VFMA&C President Charles A. McGeorge. He is the first non-military president in the school’s 78 year history. “Women attending our college is a natural step in creating a more robust and diverse learning environment.”
Discussion around admitting women began one and a half years ago, and the Board of Trustees voted in favor in July. As of August, dormitories were already renovated.
Says spokesman Rod Hill: “The research says there is still a good benefit for single-sex education at the high school level, but we believe the time has come for a coed program at the college level.”
Valley Hill joins a succession of schools opening their academics to both sexes, with strong rises in enrollment. Immaculata University in Frazer, PA, opened its doors to men last fall. As a result, freshman enrollment doubled, and about 35 percent of students are now men.
“That is a healthy, healthy increase,” said Sister Patricia Fadden, president of Immaculata.
