According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the U.S. Department of Education has waived several financial aid regulations governing students and colleges in the regions devastated by Hurricane Katrina. A spokeswoman for the Department indicated these rule changes, which were automatically triggered when areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama were declared “federal disaster areas,” are only the beginning and that officials will release more relief in the weeks to come.
Among the already announced changes:
- Student borrowers remain enrolled students even if they do not attend classes.
- Lenders can place student loans in forbearance, which means students are not required to make payments and are not in danger of defaulting.
- Disaster assistance provided by federal or state governments does not count as income when calculating a students expected contribution
- Several deadlines for aid applications are extended until December 1st.
