Elizabeth Hoffman, President of the University of Colorado has resigned amid several controversies involving the institution's football program and criticism of her handling of an outspoken professor who compared September 11, 2001 terrorist attack victims to a Nazi war criminal.
Colorado State Representative Joe Stangel had called for her resignation saying that she “is overwhelmed by the series of controversies facing CU and is unable to right the ship.”
Ms. Hoffman told the Chronicle of Higher Education that her resignation was not in response to political pressure saying she was taking the action in order to have a “stronger voice” by taking her “future off the table.”
The football program has seen a seemingly endless bevy of controversies during the last year including allegations that recruits were given drugs and alcohol, that Coach Gary Barnett had operated a slush fund using money from a football camp, and most seriously, that an assistant coach sexual assaulted two female trainers.
Additionally, it was discovered that Ward Churchill, professor of ethnic studies at the University's Boulder Campus had called some 9/11 victims “little Eichmanns” whose tacit support of exploitative capitalism left them less than blameless for the attacks.
Ms. Hoffman's refusal to fire either Barnett or Churchill has fueled criticism of her leadership. She will step down June 30th or whenever a successor is named.
