In a new report, The National Student Clearinghouse has released compiled data on the more than 18,000 displaced students from six New Orleans area campuses forced to suspend operations by Hurricane Katrina.
In all, 1,017 NSC member institutions located in all 50 states and the District of Columbia took in students, with nearly three quarters going to ten states.
Of the six schools in the report (Delgado Community College, Dillard University, Loyola University New Orleans, Tulane University, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of New Orleans), more than half came from Tulane (5,900) or UNO (4,702).
While about half of the displaced students were enrolled at private institutions, nearly three-quarters found refuge at public institutions led by Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge taking in 3,271 (18%) students.
More than 2,800 colleges, enrolling 91% of US college students, are members of the National Student Clearinghouse.
