Basics of XML for Data Standards: Tools and Strategies for Transcript Exchange and More This workshop will discuss currently available technologies for exchanging educational records electronically using eXtensible Markup Language (XML). It will provide attendees with the foundation to enhance one's understanding of XML-related terminology and concepts. The focus will be on the postsecondary transcript and related electronic documents, but will also cover current XML development for exchange of financial aid documents, admiss ion applications, and course inventories. Also discussed will be the state of standards-setting within the community, in particular the work of the Postsecondary Electronic Standards Council and the AACRAO SPEEDE Committee. A few case studies and strategies will help you understand the components for moving forward with XML development on your campus.

System Re-Engineering: Cases, Pitfalls, Opportunities
How can you get the most out of your human, financial, and time resources? How can you move things forward in your office instead of staying with the notion that we've always done it this way? This workshop explores the basic principles of Business Process Re-engineering and how the electronic exchange of data can help. Use your staff more efficiently rather than have them do the repetitive work that your computer systems can do for you!

The Delivery of Student Services via Kuali Enterprise Workflow (KEW)
Indiana University has developed (and continues to develop) a suite of online self service student processes leveraging the community-source Kuali Enterprise Workflow (KEW) architecture. These student services are built to integrate through vendor-established Application Programming Interfaces ( APIs) with the institution's proprietary Student Record ERP (Oracle/PeopleSoft). In this workshop, the Kuali Enterprise Workflow infrastructure will be examined, KEW "tools" will be demonstrated, and document routing and rules will be discussed.
The construction of specific applications will be examined in detail, including:
1) student post first-week drop and add,
2) faculty grade change (after roster posting), and
3) special credit processing.
Lastly, the presenters will discuss the future of this environment within Indiana University and how KEW may be adopted and implemented at your institution.
Note: This session will serve as a detailed extension of the 2007 Technology Conference session "Using Kuali Workflow with a Student Records ERP on a bed of Kuali Rice (Middleware)."
