Conference Background
For fifteen years, AACRAO has sponsored the development of standard data formats for use by colleges and universities and represented postsecondary interests in the North American standards-setting body, the American National Standards Institute Accredited Standards Committee X12. In support of this development, AACRAO has been home to the AACRAO EDI in Education conference (now called the AACRAO Technology Conference), presented by the SPEEDE committee, which has led the initiative for the electronic exchange of education records via standardized formats. The EDI movement is continuing to make good strides. It documents ongoing exchange volume both on and off the UT Austin Internet Server, although the latter alone has now delivered well over a million transcripts – free of charge to the educational institutions – and over three million transactions.
At the new Technology Conference, experts from the AACRAO SPEEDE Committee will continue to provide sessions and discussion that offer significant help in understanding the use of software, electronic standards, the traditional X12 EDI format as well as XML. This will be a unique opportunity to get up to speed on the development of XML and to determine its’ impact on the EDI implementation plans at your institution.
With the maturation of EDI, the advent of XML, and a host of other new and related technologies, AACRAO believes that now is the perfect time to expand the meeting's scope. Indeed, XML has progressed as another arrow in the SPEEDE quiver and the conference will therefore include XML sessions. New tracks will also be added to identify and explore other technologies and initiatives. The conference will be "forward looking" with much of the emphasis on implementation and functionality.
