Brian Kelly

Higher Education: A View from Outside Academe

Brian Kelly is the Executive Editor of U.S. News & World Report. He was previously Managing Editor and Assistant Managing Editor for the U.S. News section, supervising and editing domestic news and political coverage.

Kelly joined the magazine in 1998 after serving as congressional editor of the Washington Post, a position that included overseeing coverage of Capitol Hill and political campaigns. He is the author of the book Adventures in Porkland, a study of pork barrel politics on Capitol Hill and co-authored the books The Four Little Dragons and Amazon.

Kelly has appeared on numerous television programs, including NBC's Tonight Show and Today, along with the CNN programs Larry King Live and Reliable Sources. He earned a BA in economics from Georgetown University.

Bob Bontrager, Director of the AACRAO Strategic Enrollment Management Conference, has 20 years of experience in enrollment management at small private and large public institutions. His areas of expertise include creating successful enrollment management organizations, strategic planning, recruitment strategy, orientation, financial aid, marketing, and net revenue strategies. At Oregon State University, Dr. Bontrager's leadership resulted in a 40% increase in enrollment, including increases in the academic and diversity profile of the student body.

Dr. Bontrager is Co-Director of AACRAO Consulting Services and serves half-time as Director of Partnership Programs for Oregon State University, overseeing OSU's unique Degree Partnership program with community colleges and high schools, and directing the Degree Partnership Summit Conference each May. He teaches and advises master's and doctoral students as a faculty member in Oregon State's College Student Services Administration program.

Mary Baxton is Associate Director of Admissions and Records at California State University, Northridge. She is the university admissions officer for domestic and international admissions.

She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Cal State, Northridge, and has worked there for over 30 years. She is currently serving on AACRAO's Board of Directors as the Vice President for International Education, and recently served as the NAFSA Region XII ADSEC/RAP representative. She is author of the country profiles on Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and three areas of Canada for the AACRAO/EDGE project (Electronic Database for Global Education).

Baxton is the AACRAO Transfer Credit Practices (TCP) reporting officer for the state of California. Her participation in the Baden-Württemberg German Seminar last fall, and presentations at two European conferences gave her insight into the Bologna/three-year degree issues that are emerging as important topics for U.S. graduate admissions.

Gil Brown

Gil Brown has served as Budget Director at Rice University, Georgetown University, and Oregon State University. He currently serves as an academic administrator at The George Washington University. In these roles he has worked closely with enrollment managers to craft long-term strategies addressing both student and institutional financial needs. Brown has conducted workshops on strategic planning, information technology, modeling tools and budgeting, and has also served as a consultant to private and public institutions on issues ranging from information technology strategy to mechanisms for funding intercollegiate athletics.

Chris J. Foley is the Director of International Admissions and the Chief of Operations for Undergraduate Admissions at Indiana University-Bloomington. He has worked in admissions, public relations, and marketing for ten years and has experience with recruitment, market analysis, strategic planning, admissions, technology, credit transfer, and immigration.

He is the author of AACRAO's The Educational System of Kyrgyzstan and is editor of AACRAO's forthcoming publication on the educational systems of Central Asia. He has been an instructor of international credentials evaluation for six years and a consultant on international admissions, credentials evaluation, and recruitment. He has served on numerous committees for AACRAO and NAFSA concerning international education. Foley holds a B.A. from the University of Arkansas and an M.A. and M.F.A. from Indiana University.

Francisco Guajardo

Postsecondary Access and Success for Latino Students

Francisco Guajardo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership in the College of Education at the University of Texas Pan American (UTPA). Prior to completing a Ph.D. at the University of Texas, he taught for twelve years in a rural high school along the Texas-Mexico border. He also directs a nonprofit organization called the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development, a group dedicated to the development of public school teachers, administrators, and youth leaders.

Guajardo's passion and academic interests in transnational issues, border development, and rural education have led him to participate in national and international work. He is founding chairman of the board of directors of the Center for Rural Strategies, a nonprofit media-based organization dedicated to advocating issues of rural education and community development. He served as Fellow in the Kellogg Leadership for Community Change initiative, was a 2001 faculty member at the Salzburg Seminar, a 2003 Fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio, Italy, international conference, served as documentarian for the World Indigenous People's Conference in Hamilton, New Zealand in November 2005, and is a Fellow with the Kellogg Foundation's 2006-2011 national initiative—Rural People, Rural Policy.

Miguel A. Guajardo

Postsecondary Access and Success for Latino Students

Miguel A. Guajardo is an Assistant Professor in the Education and Community Leadership Program at Texas State University-San Marcos. His research interests include issues of community building, community youth development, organic leadership development, race and ethnicity, the change process, and university and community partnerships.

He was a Fellow with the Kellogg International Leadership Program and the Salzburg Seminar. He is also a co-founder and the chairman of the board of directors of the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development in South Texas.

Dr. Guajardo's work has been informed by the local ecology and the values of fairness, good work, and democracy. He has traveled to five continents and has engaged in conversation with indigenous leaders, teachers, and citizens on issues of education, development, citizenship, and identity.

Dr. Guajardo earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership with an emphasis on the politics and policy of education from the University of Texas at Austin.

Thomas Huddleston, Jr.

Strategic Visibility: Building a Brand and Integrated Marketing Campaign

Thomas Huddleston, Jr. serves as the Vice President, Marketing, Communications, and Admissions, at the University of Central Florida. He was selected to lead a new initiative at the university that addresses brand identity, integrated marketing, news and information, and undergraduate enrollment issues. The university enrolls 45,000 students. Previously, he served as Vice President of the Student Development and Enrollment Services division. The division was among the most comprehensive in size and scope of its type in the nation.

Within his work in higher education, he has focused on the development of comprehensive enrollment management models and distinctive strategies to strengthen student enrollment and the student-learning environment. Particular attention has been on the marketing of higher education, new student growth, integrated student development programs, and student retention.

He received bachelor and master degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce. His doctorate is from Oklahoma State University.

Christine Kerlin

Christine Kerlin is currently the Associate Dean for Enrollment Services and Interim Executive Director of the University Center at Everett Community College. Prior to arriving at Everett in 1996, Kerlin served as Director of Admissions and Records at Central Oregon Community College and as the Director of Admissions at The Evergreen State College.

She is active in AACRAO, Past President of PACRAO, and Past Chair of NAFSA Region One. Kerlin was chair of AACRAO's Nominations & Elections Committee for 2005-2006, chaired AACRAO's Task Force 2000, co-facilitated AACRAO's Introduction to Enrollment Management Workshops in 2001, served as founding faculty of PACRAO's Emerging Professionals Institute, and authored chapters in AACRAO's recent publications: The AACRAO International Guide: A Resource for International Education Professionals; Essentials of Enrollment Management: Cases in the Field; and The Registrar's Guide: Evolving Best Practices in Records and Registration.

Shani Lenore

Shani Lenore, Director of Admission at Maryville University in St. Louis, is an emerging leader in the enrollment management field. Her ten-year career has included admission positions at Columbia College, Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), and Saint Louis University, where she served as the Director of Undergraduate Admission.

While at SEMO, Lenore increased minority enrollment by 15%, formed a Multicultural Recruitment Team, and developed partnerships with minority-focused organizations throughout the St. Louis and Southeast Missouri region. During her tenure at Saint Louis University, Lenore developed and implemented detailed recruitment/marketing/enrollment campaigns and employed financial aid leveraging strategies resulting in record freshman classes in 2003, 2004, and 2005, while maintaining academic quality, lowering the discount rate, and increasing geographic and ethnic diversity.

Lenore completed her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Truman State University in 1994, and is currently completing her master's degree in administration from Southeast Missouri State University.

Louise M. Lonabocker

Louise Lonabocker is Director, Student Services and University Registrar at Boston College. She earned her Ph.D. in higher education administration at Boston College in 1981, and has been employed there since 1970. She currently directs Boston College's One-Stop organization.

Lonabocker is a Past-President of AACRAO, served on numerous AACRAO committees and task forces, and was a member of the AACRAO Board of Directors for six years. She has presented over 40 conference sessions, written 20 articles and 5 book chapters, and was the editor of Breakthrough Systems: Student Access and Registration. She is the current editor of College and University journal.

Philomena Mantella

Philomena Mantella joined Northeastern University as Vice President for Enrollment Management in January 2001, and was promoted to her current role as Senior Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs in March 2002. Dr. Mantella is a graduate of Syracuse University, where she earned her B.S. and M.S.W., and of Michigan State, where she earned her Ph.D. in educational administration.

Having worked in higher education for 24 years, Dr. Mantella's background includes broad experience in virtually every area of enrollment management and student services. She previously served as Executive Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Life at Pace University in New York; as the Senior Enrollment Manager at Fairleigh Dickinson University; Vice President for Student Affairs at SUNY College of Optometry; and at Ferris State University, Dr. Mantella served as the Associate Dean of Enrollment Services.

James L. Maraviglia

James Maraviglia has been actively involved in admissions and recruitment for the past 31 years. He was appointed Assistant Vice President for Admissions, Recruitment, and Financial Aid at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) in 2002 after serving as the Executive Director of Admissions and Recruitment from 1993. He joined Cal Poly as the Director of Admissions in 1991.

Prior to his tenure at Cal Poly, Maraviglia was the Director of Admissions and High School College Relations at Central Washington University from 1984 until 1991. He has also worked in admissions at Triton Community College, Chicago State University, and started his career in admissions as a student intern at Elmhurst College.

He has won a series of awards from a number of professional associations for initiatives his unit has brought to the profession. He helped launch the first electronic application, electronic view book, CD-ROM prospectus, and was one of the earliest innovators of electronic customer relations support systems. He has also written numerous papers on enrollment planning, admissions, recruitment, and re-engineering the workplace through technology and now serves as a professional consultant to a number of institutions interested in implementing similar solutions for their enrollment initiatives.

Steven Perry

Steven Perry is Vice President for Student Development at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, overseeing a division spanning more than 20 functional areas encompassing student life and enrollment services, and nearly 200 employees. He has served on the faculty of SEM XI and SEM XIV, and has presented nationally. He is the recipient of a State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service and currently serves as President of the SUNY Council of Chief Student Affairs Officers.

Dr. Perry has 28 years of experience in student affairs, including experience in career services, academic advisement, and admissions. Prior to his appointment as Vice President, he served as Associate Vice President for Student Development and Interim Director of Admissions. He has been responsible for building an enrollment management culture within student affairs, and providing leadership and data to shape a campus culture that supports an enrollment management/student affairs partnership.

Michele Sandlin is the Director of Admissions at Oregon State University. Her experience in higher education spans 25 years in various offices within enrollment management. Sandlin is well-known for her expertise in operations management and articulation. She is involved with AACRAO, served as President of OrACRAO (Oregon Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers), and has held multiple chair and committee positions within PACRAO (Pacific Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).

Sandlin has designed and presented numerous sessions and workshops, and also consults and assists other universities on partnership initiatives, operations efficiencies, holistic admissions assessment, and office reengineering. She was recently awarded the Tom Bilger Citation for Service award by AACRAO. Sandlin has a B.S. in human development from Colorado State University, and an M.S. in education from Portland State University.

Clayton A. Smith

Clayton Smith has over 20 years of broad experience in enrollment management, policy analysis, and public administration. He currently serves as Vice-Provost, Students and as Registrar at the University of Windsor, where he serves as Chief Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Officer, and Secretary of the Senate. His prior appointment was as Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management at the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology in Cobleskill, New York.

Dr. Smith's enrollment management experience includes positions encompassing admissions, advisement, enrollment management, international student affairs, marketing, orientation, records, registration, scholarships and awards, student recruitment, and student retention at a variety of public higher educational institutions—large and small, residential and commuter, rural and urban, two-year and four-year—in Maine, Florida, New York, and Ontario. He has successfully led institutions through the development and implementation of strategic enrollment management plans, and participated in the development of institutional and inter-institutional strategic plans.

Dr. Smith holds a B.A. (political science) from the University of Southern Maine, an M.A. (political science) from Drew University, an M.P.A. (public administration) from the University of Maine, and an Ed.D. (higher education) from Florida State University.

Roger Sullivan

Roger Sullivan is Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, overseeing its enrollment service areas.

He has served on the faculty of SEM XI and SEM XIV, has presented nationally on a variety of enrollment management topics, and is also the recipient of a State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. He is also a past President of the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association.

Sullivan has 30 years of experience in admissions, student development, and enrollment management; his work has focused on the development of partnerships between the areas of enrollment management and student life that support student recruitment and increase undergraduate student satisfaction. At SUNY Oneonta, Sullivan's work this past decade has contributed to significant increases in prospective student application numbers and student profile, as well as student diversity, retention, and enrollment gains achieved by the college.

Eddie West has more than ten years of experience in international recruitment and education. He joined California State University, Northridge in 2001, and today serves as Director of International Student Services and Recruitment for The Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning. In this capacity he leads the international marketing efforts of the university, with the aim of attracting and enrolling high-caliber international students in the university's credit and non-credit programs

He began his career working for Kokusai College of Foreign Languages in Osaka, Japan, where he developed and managed an array of short and long-term study overseas programs in partnership with institutions in the U.S. and Europe.

West graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English, and will complete his master's degree in communication management at the University of Southern California this December.

With over 23 years in higher education, Dr. Amanda Yale is currently serving as the Associate Provost for Enrollment Services at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Her areas of responsibility include undergraduate and graduate admissions, orientation, financial aid, academic records and summer school, retention services, academic services (academic advisement, first-year seminar, learning communities, tutoring, supplemental instruction, EOP and TRIO programs, and developmental coursework), career services, and services for students with disabilities.

Dr. Yale has presented nationally on issues related to first-year advisement, first-year transition and intervention services, freshman seminar, learning communities, academic support services and early intervention programs, orientation programming, SEM planning, and leading an enrollment management division. She is the recipient of several national awards for exemplary programs related to marketing and recruitment initiatives, retention programming, first-year initiatives, and academic advisement. Dr. Yale has served as a consultant for several national organizations as well as more than 30 higher education institutions.

Kelly Field

Kelly Field is a Government and Politics reporter for the Chronicle of Higher Education. She has covered the Commission on the Future of Higher Education since its creation last fall, and attended all of its meetings. Before she joined the Chronicle in 2004, she covered the HELP and Education and the Workforce Committees for Congressional Quarterly. Field holds a B.A. in Spanish and Psychology from Colby College and an M.A. in Journalism from Boston University.

Doug Lederman

Doug Lederman is co-editor and one of three founders of Inside Higher Ed (http://insidehighered.com), a national daily publication about higher education. With Scott Jaschik, he leads the editorial operations of Inside Higher Ed, overseeing news and features, opinion pieces, career news and interactive features. Lederman is among the leading journalists on higher education in the country, speaking widely on the topic at conferences and on radio and television, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, the Nieman Foundation Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, and the Princeton Alumni Weekly.

Lederman was Managing Editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education from 1999 to 2003. Before that, he had worked at The Chronicle since 1986 in a variety of roles, first as an athletics reporter and editor. His work at The Chronicle won two National Awards for Education Reporting from the Education Writers Association. He began his career as a news clerk at The New York Times. He graduated in 1984 from Princeton University.
