Fighting Diploma Mill Fraud: What YOU Can Do

Fictitious universities, bogus accreditation agencies, fraudulent foreign credential evaluation services – they all belong to a billion-dollar industry that defrauds higher education around the globe. Join internationally-renowned experts for a day devoted to becoming informed and taking action to fight this problem. An expansion of last year’s workshop, this year’s presentation will include breakout sessions for colleagues from government-administered educational systems, for those working in a U.S. legal context, and for transcript evaluators who want practice in identifying fraudulent entities.
Topics to be covered:
- Why bogus degree vendors have branched out to establish bogus verification and accreditation services, how it is possible for them to sell your institution’s degrees and transcripts, and what you can do to stop them.
- How to use the Internet to find and track fraudsters and what you should do when you discover their “hiding places.”
- How your institution can partner with law enforcement to fight diploma mill fraud.
- Approaches for taking action in the context of U.S. higher education and U.S. law, and
approaches to fighting degree mill fraud in the context of government-administered educational systems.
- Case studies involving degrees and transcripts from diploma mills.

Using the AACRAO International Guide: A Resource for International Professionals, we will introduce beginning professionals to the key aspects of international admissions.
