University of Wisconsin Student Dies of Bacterial Meningitis

April 22, 2013

University of Wisconsin-Madison student Henry Mackaman died April 11 after being diagnosed with meningococcal disease, a type of bacterial meningitis. Mackaman was a senior, majoring in English and economics. Two other UW students have died from the disease since 2010. According to UW Health Services Director Sarah Van Orman, the disease is not easily transmitted between people and students are not at a heightened risk of contracting it. The disease requires the transmission of saliva, for example through sharing utensils or cups, or kissing.
