University of New Mexico Expands MOOCs

This fall the University of New Mexico will offer three massive open online courses (MOOCs), which already have more enrollees than UNM's entire student body, reports The Albuquerque Journal.

UNM's first MOOC, offered last spring, enrolled more than 48,000 students from 192 countries. Coursera, the private company that delivers MOOCs for UNM, said the courses enhance the university's reputation. In addition, some students convert from online MOOC takers to UNM students.

A Coursera official told The Chronicle of Higher Education last year that most students enrolled in a MOOC do not intend to finish but instead to explore, reported the Journal. The completion rate for MOOCs is about 10 percent but that increases for students who indicate they plan to do the work. Students who complete their first assignment have a completion rate of 45 percent. For those students who indicate a desire to attend UNM or seek a certificate, the Journal reported that the rate is 80 percent.
