Patrick G. Harran, a chemistry professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, will stand trial on felony charges related to the death of a research assistant. Sheharbano (Sheri) Sangji, 23, died in a 2008 laboratory fire when she was accidentally splashed with a chemical compound that ignited. UCLA also faced charges in the incident, but reached a settlement to resolve them. Harran, who has the support of the university, faces up to four and a half years in prison if convicted. The case is believed to be the first in which a professor would be prosecuted in an incident in an academic lab setting.
